Grown-ups, you can keep your Coachella and other big festivals… young kids have a festival of their own, and this one — with music, other live entertainment, and a good cause, and all free — is right here at home!
Local children’s musicians Rainbow Rock have taken their annual Tot Rock Festival and joined others to host a community event that is all about local kids but also helps children in other places through music and more The free event, the Del Ray Play Date 2017, takes place on Saturday, May 13, 2017.
The Rainbow Rock Collection (“Rockin the Rainbow to kids in need one item at a time!”) has partnered with the City of Alexandria, Mind the Mat, the Mindful Junkie, CrossFit Kids OldTown, and National Community Church for an amazing day of music, movement, and making a difference for children in and around the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria.
The Rainbow Rock Collection will host Alexandria’s Tot Rock Fest 9 am to 1 pm on the fields of the Mt. Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22301. Festival attendees are encouraged to bring a “new” or “used” musical instrument to the festival! Organizers will be collecting instruments for Now I Play Along Too and collecting financial donations both on-site and on the website (www.totrockfest.com).
All proceeds will be used to buy instruments and go directly to “Now I Play Along Too,” which supports music programs in Haiti, Florida, and locally at the DC Dream Center. The Rainbow Rock Band will be helping to deliver the instruments collected at the festival to an orphanage in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, this summer along with their friends from Melodime.
Also happening along Mt. Vernon Avenue on May 13th, is La Bella Strada, an Italian Street Painting Festival, and a rummage sale at the Department of Human Services (2525 Mt. Vernon Avenue), highlighting clothing, toys and equipment for children.
The Tot Rock Fest is a festival for infant to 7-year-olds but kids of all ages are welcome. The event takes place rain or shine and features some of the area’s most popular children’s entertainers along with activities designed to strengthen the body and mind. See the schedule below!
