When i started FairfaxFamilyFun.com, my goal was to keep things close to home, right in or right around Fairfax County. That is still the focus of this site and why most of the content is on the immediate area. But there are some truly special events and places most definitely worth the drive, and I am happy to share information on those.
One of those, a place we have loved for years and fully support (in fact, we have a family membership), is the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum in Winchester, Virginia. We “discovered” this place when our son was around three years old, and it was perfect timing. A few years later, our early love for this great children’s museum is still going strong.
We are therefore SUPER excited for the museum’s grand re-opening tomorrow, Saturday, May 11, in its new location! The museum, still in Old Town Winchester, moved just a few blocks away to a bigger location. This weekend’s grand opening includes free admission for everyone on Saturday, and free admission to moms on Sunday (Mother’s Day) –
The new and expanded location, at 19 West Cork Street, with its extra space and three stories, accommodates larger exhibits that were previously in storage, plus more classroom and special event spaces. The newly renovated, 14.500 square foot facility, will feature hands-on science, cultural, environmental, and media exhibitions. The museum had noted that many of the favorite exhibits will still be there (I’m hoping that meas the “build a roller coaster” room is still there!).
In any event, it will be great to see what the new museum looks like! After all, the previous one managed to cleverly pack an amazing amount of fun activities (covering nature, science, art, and more) in a smaller, more limited space. Be sure to check out this fantastic museum this weekend or very soon (annual memberships, special events, and birthday parties are available)!
Want to make it a weekend trip? Old Town Winchester has a great walking plaza with nice restaurants and shops (we’re big fans of Incredible Flying Objects, an independent specialty toy store). Nearby, you also can visit Dinosaurland with more than 50 large dinosaurs (great for learning and photo ops!) and a big gift shop.
