One of the newest summer events, sure to become a local tradition, returns to Lake Anne Plaza soon: the Reston Historic Trust & Museum hosts the third annual Lake Anne Cardboard Boat Regatta on Saturday, August 10, 2019.
The fun takes place on the Lake Anne Plaza waterfront in the afternoon, with the first race at 1 pm. Arrive earlier to see all the boats before they hit the water: boats will start arriving on the plaza at 10:30 am, and by noon all will be ready to view. After you see the creative displays, watch the boats go on the water to see how sturdy (or not!) these cardboard watercraft can be. Cardboard boat regattas are just that — races with boats made out of cardboard and little else. They are fun to participate in or just to watch, as the annual Springfield Days Cardboard Boat Regatta has shown.
For the Lake Anne competition, teams of all ages will construct and decorate their own life-size cardboard boat for the competition. The teams will race in timed heats, rowing out to a out to a designated buoy and back to the docks at Lake Anne Plaza. There will be awards in various categories, and the entry fees benefit the Reston Historic Trust & Reston Museum at Lake Anne Plaza.
For spectators, there will be special displays, craft activities, and more. See the official website for details.
