One of the newest summer events, sure to become a local tradition, returns to Lake Anne Plaza soon: the Reston Historic Trust & Museum recently announced the date for the second annual Lake Anne Cardboard Boat Regatta, taking place on Saturday, August 11, 2018.
Registration is currently only open to those who pre-registered last year for the event, but you can join the waitlist on the official website in case spots open up. If you just want to watch, go to the Lake Anne Plaza waterfront that day to see how creative and sturdy (or not!) these cardboard watercraft can be. Cardboard boat regattas are just that — races with boats made out of cardboard and little else. They are fun to participate in or just to watch, as the annual Springfield Days Cardboard Boat Regatta has shown.
In the Lake Anne competition, to take in the afternoon (this year’s times have not been announced, but last year the event ran from 2 pm to 6 pm), teams of all ages can construct and decorate their own life-size cardboard boat for the competition. The teams will race in timed heats, rowing out to a out to a designated buoy and back to the docks at Lake Anne Plaza. There will be awards in various categories, and the entry fees ($100 for adults and families and $40 for students age 10-18) will benefit the Reston Historic Trust & Reston Museum at Lake Anne Plaza.
