Northern Virginia Christmas Tree Farms
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… but it’s not complete without the tree! For some families, setting up the tree begins with taking an artificial pine out of a storage box. But people who love the fresh scent of natural pine, the holidays entail the search for that “perfect” tree. A trip to a Christmas tree farm is a tradition for some families, and we in Northern Virginia have good options nearby. Most Northern Virginia Christmas Tree Farms are in the western suburbs. The ones we list below, more than a dozen, are all within an hour or just a little more of Fairfax County.
Most of these Northern Virginia Christmas Tree farms have both cut-your-own and pre-cut options. Whether you’re looking for a Blue Spruce, Fraser Fir, or other tree, you’re bound to find one nearby. Please visit the official websites (all linked below) for this season’s dates and hours of operation. Before you go: Christmas tree tips
- Learn about the different types of trees to determine which may be best for you.
- Go early: Most of these farms open around Thanksgiving weekend and are open only through early or mid-December.
- Call ahead to check policies and availability. Some tree varieties may sell out quickly, and some farms do not accept credit cards for tree purchases.
- Be sure you have a base that will be sturdy enough to support the tree, especially if you’re planning on getting a large tree.
- Know exactly where you’re going to put the tree, and measure the location’s height. Make sure you leave enough space for a tree topper to “clear” the ceiling, and remember that the tree base likely will add a few more inches in height.
- If you’re going to cut your own tree, come prepared: many farms will have saws for you to use, but you should still bring sturdy work gloves. If you’re bringing kids with you, go over safety rules. Please note that most farms on this list do not allow chainsaws.
- Bring a camera, as many of these farms have fun spots for family pictures.
- When your tree is home, remember that freshly cut trees need enough water and that they have more fire hazards. See these tips from the American Christmas Tree Association to keep your holidays happy and safe.
