Big wheels are not just for kids! If you’ve ever attended a Monster Jam® show, you know how much fun and excitement awaits. And you don’t need to be a die-hard fan (although we have loved these events for years!) — even if you are just a casual spectator, it’s hard not to get wrapped up in the excitement of watching big monster trucks, elaborately decorated, do all kinds of fun tricks.
Each year in the DC area you can enjoy a Monster Jam® show, as we did on January 26, 2019, at Capital One Arena. This family-friendly motor sport event appeals to audiences young or old, boys and girls alike, as they watch competitors contend in customized high-powered vehicles. This year we were treated to Grave Digger, Scooby Doo, Nitro Menace, Monster Mutt Dalmatian, Stinger, Pretty Wicked, Barbaria, and Bad News Travel Fast.
The Monster Jam drivers are trained world-class male and female athletes who have mastered not only the physical strength and mental stamina needed to compete, but the vital dexterity to control 12,000-pound machines capable of doing backflips, vertical two-wheel skills and racing at speeds up to 70 miles per hour to produce jaw-dropping, live motor sports action seen around the world.
A fun “plus” this time around was the chance for fans to help pick the winners! Now across all Monster Jam events, fans in every city will have the chance to vote for the winner in the two-wheel and freestyle competitions by real-time, in-venue fan voting on their smartphones. Setting this up was a quick process and the preteen boys in our group — one who has attended many Monster Jam shows over the years, and the other a “newbie” who had never attended a motor sport event like this — loved this. After a while, even the adults couldn’t resist and started voting, too! It was great to see the results immediately up on the big screens and we hope this is a feature that continues to be a part of future shows.
