We are just a week away from Memorial Day, a time for our country to remember and honor the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives to protect our freedoms. Being so close to the nation’s capital gives us a very easy opportunity to honor veterans all throughout the year by visiting the many memorials, battlefields, and historic sites in Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia. From wreath-laying ceremonies to rallies to concerts to festivals, Memorial Day tributes and celebrations abound in and near Fairfax County.
You may, of course, want to head into Washington, DC, to visit the memorials, see the Rolling Thunder motorcycle gathering, or enjoy the Memorial Day Parade. We have done all of these and think they are events you must do at least once every few years.
If you want to stay closer to home, though, Fairfax County offers many ways to honor our veterans and celebrate the unofficial start of summer, including the Ride of the Patriots, the Falls Church Memorial Day Parade and Festival, the Wolf Trap Summer Blast-off, the thee-day ViVa Vienna Festival, and more. Don’t worry about hunting down all this information… we’ve already gathered it for you in one place! Visit our Memorial Day Events 2014 page in our Summer Guide for details!
Tell us in the comments below: how do you honor veterans? What tips do you have for your fellow readers attending these events? And finally, are there any we missed that you think we should include? Thanks!
