(1) Be prepared: That goes without saying, but we all get busy and it’s easy for things to fall by the wayside. If you still need to get some snow gear, do it NOW… you know soon stores will be packing spring merchandise and the instant a big storm hits, you won’t be able to find winter boots in your kid’s size! Remember to also check consignment stores and ask friends for hand-me-downs, particularly if it’s late in the season and you don’t want to spend full price for stuff they will outgrow soon.
(2) Stock up on fun at home: Whether you plan to get out and enjoy a “winter wonderland” or just stay at home, be sure you have enough to keep the kids busy on snow days. If staying in, browse our Pinterest page, particularly the Fun Indoor Activities and Fun with Science boards ,for crafts, games, experiments, and other projects to keep the kids active and happy. If you want to play outside, our Fun With Snow and Ice page has great ideas.
(3) Map your local sledding hills: See our Winter Wonderland guide for local sledding hills and places to go cross-country skiing in and right around Fairfax County. Find the ones closest to you, ask neighbors and friends for their input, and map routes for those closest to you. When there’s snow on the ground, you’ll want to get somewhere close by quickly but safely. Knowing exactly where to go and how to get there will help make that happen!
