One of the area’s best community festivals is coming up: the Herndon Festival! This four-day event, now in its 36th year, is part carnival, part music festival, and 100 percent fun for all ages. The Herndon Festival takes place Thursday through Sunday, June 2-5, 2016, in downtown Herndon. Here you can enjoy carnival rides, see live entertainment, let the kids experience hands-on art in the Kids’s Alley, and even take part in 5K and 10K races and a fitness expo. The official festival brochure online has a full schedule for each day, a bright and easy-to-use festival map, information on transportation, details on the daily entertainment, and useful festival tips.
This festival packs a lot into one area and has a special feature: fireworks! Fireworks displays are scheduled for Thursday, June 2, and Saturday, June 4, beginning around 9:30 pm and visible throughout the festival. Other festival highlights include an art show, live entertainment on three stages, and of course, lots of carnival rides!
Festival hours are 6 pm-10 pm on Thursday, 5 pm-11 pm on Friday, 10 am-11 pm on Saturday, and 10 am-6pm on Saturday. Admission is free.
If your kids love carnival rides, I also highly recommend taking advantage of the all-you-can-ride wristband offer. While festival admission is free, carnival rides have become very pricey, and if your kids want to ride more than three or so (as most kids do!) this turns out to be a great deal: for just $16 per person, you can enjoy unlimited rides 6-10 pm on Thursday or 10 am-2 pm on Saturday.
Since single tickets are $1.25 and most rides take 4-5 tickets, this can be a good deal. You can purchase the wristbands for Thursday ahead of time at the Herndon Community Center or on-site at the carnival on Thursday night. Saturday wristbands can only be purchased on-site at the carnival. Wristbands and tickets are nonrefundable. The Herndon Festival is a rain-or-shine event.
