Christmas in New York: if you’ve ever experienced it, you know it is a magical time. The bright lights and energy of the big city, combined with the sparkle and spirit of the holidays, give New York at Christmas time a special feel. If you want a taste of this without leaving home, consider attending “Christmas in New York,” the new original show by Encore Theatrical Arts Project (ETAP).
This Broadway-style holiday musical tells the story of Eddie, a boy bursting with ideas who attends a strange new boarding school with eccentric classmates and a sensational new teacher who promises fame and glory . . . but for whom? Eddie finds himself in a world of wonder filled with amazing inventions and adventures from the North Pole to the International Toy Convention in New York City.
As always, you can expect this to be a top-notch production with original choreography, amazing sets, and lavish costumes. ETAP has been delighting local audiences (and even some abroad, as they have performed overseas), and we have greatly enjoyed every single production of theirs that we have attended. The shows are fantastically done, with professional-looking sets and costumes and wonderful performances. Most amazing of all, nearly all the performers are students: ETAP is a dance company made of 35 students age 10-18. Along with several professional actors, the students dance, sing, and act to an Northern Virginia audience of 5,500 people every year.
The not-for-profit performing arts company has entertained local audiences for the past 20 years. Many of its graduates have gone on to become successful professional dancers, including Radio City Rockettes and Broadway performers. What started out as a project by founder and artistic director Raynor van der Merwe now is a successful arts organization that has staged and produced more than 100 performances of original shows.
Christmas in New York will have 10 performances, all at the Ernst Theater on the Annandale Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. These shows make for a great family night out (attending is now a Christmas tradition for us) and a special treat for visiting friends or relatives; tickets also make a nice gift and are a special way to support a local arts organization. Showtimes are:
- Friday, December 11, at 8 pm
- Saturday, December 12, at noon, 4 pm, and 8 pm
- Sunday, December 13, at noon and 4 pm
- Friday, December 18, at 8 pm
- Saturday, December 19, at noon, and a Special Gala performance at 5 pm
- Sunday, December 20, at noon and 4 pm
The running time is two hours, with a 15-minute intermission (basic concessions are available). Tickets are $19 for students and seniors, and $23 for adults. The Special Gala performance on December 19, 5-11 pm, is a 20th anniversary celebration with cocktails, hors dʼoeuvres, live music, and glamour. Tickets for that event are $75-100, with the gala reception following the 5 pm show. Want to win tickets to a performance of Christmas in New York? See below!
