Breakfast has become a more popular choice at fast-food restaurants, but is it always a good idea? If you need breakfast on the go but the thought of calorie-laden, sugary, or carb-heavy choices scares you off, take a look at the new healthier and protein-rich options Chick-fil-A restaurants are introducing.
Last week I was invited to join other area bloggers and local news representatives at the Chick-fil-A Seven Corners in Falls Church to taste-test these offerings. The popular chicken chain is rolling out new menu items this month in the Washington, DC, metro area, as well as in New Jersey, San Diego, and Columbia, South Carolina.
These new, protein-filled foods include the Hash Brown Scramble (burrito or bowl), the Egg White Grill Bowl, and the Berry Chia Blend breakfast drink. Our group — which included the fun and friendly Chilli Amar of the 97.1 WASH-FM as the host — got to taste all of these items, as well as traditional Chick-fil-A foods and some of the salads.
“More people are eating breakfast away from home, and we want to meet the needs of our guests by providing breakfast options that span a variety of nutritional needs, tastes, and ingredients,” says Matt Abercrombie, senior consultant of menu development. In addition to the new items Chick-fil-A is testing in these markets (for a limited time) customers will be able to order the Chicken Egg & Cheese breakfast sandwich on an English muffin.
So, what’s the verdict? Well, we have always been happy with Chick-fil-A food and sincerely feel that you can’t go wrong with any item from any of its menus. When it comes to the new breakfast offerings, I will say that I was pleasantly surprised, though. I had expected that the Egg White Grill Bowl would be kind of boring, but it was actually very tasty! The addition of a cheddar cheese and Monterey Jack blend and sliced grilled chicken with the egg whites makes this a protein-packed choice (29 grams) that is still low-calorie (180), so it is probably all-around the most healthful choice out of the bunch.
The Hash Brown Scramble will “cost” you far more, calorie-wise (450 as a bowl, 650 as a burrito) but it also packs a lot of protein, with 30 or 31 grams, respectively. This is a hearty entrée with scrambled eggs, the Monterrey Jack cheddar blend, hash browns, and sliced Chick-fil-A Nuggets or sausage. In between those two new menu choices, calorie-wise, is the Berry Protein Blend, a smoothie-like breakfast beverage made with chia seeds, ancient grains, mixed berries, yogurt, and, somewhat surprisingly, Chick-fil-A’s signature Icedream. It’s a tasty, not-t0o-sweet, and totally portable breakfast choice with 340 calories and 23 grams of protein.
The Chicken Egg & Cheese breakfast sandwich on an English muffin was another pleasant surprise. I confess that I initially thought it would be weird… chicken and egg together? But then I thought, why not? After all, I’ve had ham and egg, bacon and egg, and even steak and egg sandwiches. Why not chicken? The grilled chicken Chick-fil-A uses in the sandwich is very tender and it actually works well with the scrambled egg.
The new breakfast items will be available in participating restaurants only for a limited time as Chick-fil-A conducts its market tests. The company will use customer feedback to decide whether to roll out nationwide in the future.
