Mention Cirque du Soleil to any adult, and right away they’ll visualize world-class acrobatics, dazzling tricks, and elegant productions. Adults can appreciate the massive amount of talent, dedication, and physical exertion these athletic and artistic performers display. Could a young kid recognize this as well? They can and they do, as we recently found out when we took our son and his friend to see Amaluna, the latest family-friendly production by Cirque du Soleil, now through September 21 at National Harbor in nearby southern Maryland.
Amaluna is set in a mysterious island governed by goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. Their queen directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony “in a rite that honors femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance,” and when the girl falls in love, of course there are bumps in the road before happily-ever-after. The title is a fusion of the words ama, which refers to “mother” in many languages, and luna, which means “moon,” a symbol of femininity that evokes both the mother-daughter relationship and the idea of goddess and protector of the planet. The show is a tribute to women, with a cast that is mostly (70 percent) female and a 100-percent female band.
If this makes you think this will be a softer, more delicate version of Cirque du Soleil, you’d be wrong with that sterotype. This is one high-energy, super-rocking show. It feels like part acrobatics, part Broadway production, and part arena rock concert. The costumes and sets are stunning, and the performances are what you’d expect from Cirque du Soleil, now in its 30th year — with incredible dancers, acrobats, body contortionists, jugglers, and more – but the music was a nice surprise. While it had its serene moments, the show’s numbers largely are some seriously rocking music.

Amaluna tickets, depending on the show date and time and when they were purchased, can range from $35 to $180 for adults; children’s tickets for ages 2-12, are $25-$170 (kids under 2 are admitted free, but must be on the lap of the parent/guardian. There are also VIP and behind-the-scenes packages available.
Cirque du Soleil is offering Fairfax Family Fun readers a special rate of buying a child’s ticket for just $25 with the purchase of an adult ticket (PL2 or PL3 ticket types). This offer is not available through the general ticket purchase web page, you can get it only through this specific link.

My family received complimentary tickets to attend a recent Amaluna show followed by a media question-and-answer session with producers. As always, all opinions expressed in this review are my own. Images (c) and provided by Cirque du Soleil.
