‘Tis the season for thousands upon thousands of twinkling lights! Each year in Northern Virginia and the metro DC area you can enjoy more than 30 holiday tree lighting events that illuminate the season. Most of these are traditional Christmas tree lighting ceremonies, usually with a dignitary in attendance (often, it’s Santa!). Some are full-out community festivals, with caroling, live entertainment, children’s activities, and even fireworks shows. There are some events unique to the DC area, such as the lighting of the national tree, and a chance to visit the Norwegian Christmas tree.
But not all the lights are strung up on a huge pine tree. Some special events include the always-fun Manassas Park Light Parade with decorated cars, and annual boat parade of lights, with boats aglow and all decked out for the season travel from Alexandria, Virginia, to the Wharf in Washington, DC, at night. Beyond the one-time Northern Virginia tree lighting events are season-long lights displays at area parks and the National Zoo, among others.
