The idea of being in a hospital bed, like the ones pictured below, is seldom a happy one. Most people who are in a hospital bed are not there by choice or for any fun reason. Unless you’re participating in the annual Annandale Hospital Bed Race, that is!
Each year the Annandale Chamber of Commerce hosts the Annandale Hospital Bed Race, a community event that seems wacky on the surface but has a serious mission at heart: raising funds for local projects and for Virginians with intellectual disabilities, including a local group home. This year’s race takes place on Saturday, May 20, 2017. This will be the 13th time the chamber has hosted the bed race.
What happens at the event? Local businesses and organizations actually race using pediatric hospital beds that they have decorated creatively. Participating teams, each with five persons (four pushers and one “rider”) race for just a short distance. Teams may include businesses, police and fire departments, community organizations, and even elected officials who compete for awards such as best decorated bed, most enthusiastic team, and fastest team. The Chamber uses the money from the registration fees ($500 per team) to support its charitable recipients. Admission is free for spectators.
The race takes place 10 am to noon at the parking lot of Magill’s, 7201 Little River Turnpike, across from Giant Food. Watch the video on the Annandale Chamber of Commerce website to see what you can expect at the bed race!
